A franchise is given for a specific time period which is divided into shorter renewal periods of about 5 years. A franchise also has a specific area or territory from which it operates. A single franchisee may be granted several such territories. Franchise agreements usually last between five and thirty years, but premature termination of a contract may occur to the detriment of a franchisee.
