Who was working on the magazine back in the days when it was getting off the ground?
In 25 years, the names and faces have changed but the association is still producing the lion’s share of the magazine in-house—the writing, the editing, the printing, the layout and design. We were doing all of those things back in the beginning, but we were sort of flying by the seat of our pants. It is a much more sophisticated operation today, but many of the functions of putting the magazine together still take place within the IFA.
What are some of the things that haven’t changed with regards to franchising since the magazine got its start?
The very nature of people who get into the franchising world magazine has, and I believe will always remain, purely entrepreneurial. The types of people who get into franchising and succeed are doers. They have a certain zeal for a business concept that are extraordinarily passionate about–they aren’t just in it solely to make money. Whether you are a franchisee who is taking a leap of faith to put your investment into a franchise system that you truly believe in; or an entrepreneur who developed a concept as your own small business and have decided to use franchising to help you grow, this spirit of entrepreneurship hasn’t changed in the 25 years of the magazine or in the 50 years the IFA has been in existence, and I firmly believe it has only gotten and will continue to get stronger over time.
