Kumon Franchise began in 1954 at Japan when Takes who is a son to Toru Kumon went home from school with poor grade in the maths test. His mother suggested that Toru should begin helping Takeshi as he had experience having taught maths at high school for 20 years. Toru began compiling worksheets that would help Takeshi to gradually understand math. The worksheets were to make Takeshi to start with the simple arithmetic to complex maths the ones that he taught at high school classes.

This is how Kumon method came to exist. After just one year, it became clear that there was much progress as Takeshi grades improved tremendously. Toru’s wife suggested that he could allow the other children in their neighborhood could benefit from using worksheets that had been developed for Takeshi. The results by this group of children were also   impressive.

Toru's wife encouraged him to allow other children in the neighborhood to use the worksheets he had developed for his son. In 1958, Kumon Institute of Education was begun in Osaka. In its first year, the institute managed to get 300 students through recommendation by word of mouth. Within a short time word had spread beyond Osaka.

The demand for the services is what led to opening of other centers at different locations.  Within a short time, Kumon had become a top private education program. Kumon program was introduced in United Kingdom in 1963. 14 years later, an English program was introduced in 1997. There are now more than 58,000 students who are studying at over 600 study centered that are located at various across UK.
